“Ká” the newest show from Cirque Du Soleil is a story of the “conflict and love” of Imperial Twins who are separated at the prime of their youth and must go on a rite of passage of self discovery. The show revolves around their encounters with Ká, the fire that has the power to destroy or illuminate.
The show actually begins about ten minutes before show time as actors, assisted by ropes, dive towards the audience in an effort to scare the patrons. When the show opens, it begins on a ship where the Imperial Twins are on their way back home where a great festivity takes place. Towards the end of the celebration, the twins and their entire family are attacked by unknown archers killing both their parents, the Emperor and Empress.
The Twins become separated as they are both captured by The Archers, those who destroyed the Imperial Palace and killed their parents. As the Twin Brother is held in the Chief Archers Den, he falls in love with the Chief Archers daughter who helps him to escape but not before giving her his flutes as a token of his appreciation and affection much to her delight. Unbeknown to her or the Twin Brother, they are spied upon by the son of The Counselor who has desired the Chief Archers daughter for a number of years. He does nothing to stop the Twin Brother but he does prepare for war.
The Twin Sister, meanwhile, has ended up in a lush magical forest full of giant insects, snakes and creatures. She finds herself rescued by a flying creature known as Firefly Boy. After rescuing the Twin Sister, he asks her to dance within the trees with him, but she reluctantly leaves in search of Twin Brother.
Finally reunited, the Twins lead a rescue of their people and inspire the other prisoners to fight and as soon as they finally escape, all are stopped by the Drums of War led by the Evil Counselor and his jaded son. As the pair are about to finally destroy the empire, the Twins are assisted by Fire Fly Boy and the creatures of the forest who help The Twins to defeat them in a counterattack. When the smoke clears, the Counselor’s son is dying on the battlefield and the Counselor wails his sorrow.
In the aftermath, The Twins now rule the Empire and each has their true love with them. The Chief Archer vows peace and the jaded son, not dead but now blinded, shows his realization of the error of his ways through a fantastic fireworks display, ending as it began; with Ká in celebration.
