"Mystere" - Mystère Cirque du Soleil Theatre Treasure Island 3300 S. Las Vegas Blvd. Las Vegas, NV 89109 Enter the Mystère Theatre at Treasure Island and you'll think a kaleidoscope exploded on the stage - vibrant shades of red, green and blue are scattered throughout, spotlights search the crowd and retractable stages are everywhere. In fact, kaleidoscope is the perfect term to describe Cirque de Soleil's imaginative show. A colorful blend of whimsy, athleticism and skill, "Mystère" is in a constant state of flux, each movement different than the next, changing form so quickly you're afraid to blink for fear of missing the next athletic feat. The show's undulating wave of artistic athleticism is epitomized in the Chinese Pole act. Performers, some dressed in double-faced masks, others in lizard costumes, scatter up and down the poles, at times touching them with only one arm. With lightning-quick reflexes, it appears they've adopted the mannerisms of animals, climbing about onstage and on the theater's walls. The stage is as much of a part of the show as the performers. Four moving lifts can create the effect of a staircase, a dark pit or a steep cliff depending on how they are moved. The center stage features a turntable that rotates up to 10 revolutions per minute. Designed by Michael Crete, the stage makes the complex feats even more amazing, not to mention dangerous. "Mystère" takes the traditional circus act and turns it into a feast for the eyes that is pure imagination and fancy. . A troupe of 72 acrobats, aerialists, dancers, musicians and comedians make up the agile cast. The finely tuned show could not do without any of its eight segments, or the entertainment that accompanies them. A mischievous clown, whose gags were met with hearty laughter, runs amok in the audience and on stage. He is the perfect foil to the ventriloquist who tries to keep things in order. And the obese baby, who charmed the crowd with his playful antics, is pure delight. The costumes, designed by Dominique Lemieux, are fantasy come alive - whether they be pregnant flower blooms, curious animals or powdered wigs. The stilt-walkers and top-heavy birds seem to defy gravity. And the lighting, designed by Luc Lafortune, is instrumental in taking the mood from merry to ominous and everywhere in between. At times there's almost too much going on in the fast-paced show, so make sure not to divert your attention for one moment. "Mystère" is more than worth its ticket price - it's an amazing spectacle we hope never leaves Las Vegas. Purchase Tickets |
